“An educational system isn’t worth a great deal if it teaches young people how to make a living but doesn’t teach them how to make a life.” ~Author Unknown

From the Headmaster

Here we are completing yet another semester at Richmond Academy. New relationships have been formed and old friendships have been made stronger.

Richmond Academy has a very unique ministry to the community. We are a partnership of home and school, working together for the purpose of preparing students academically, spiritually and emotionally for the challenge of life. We nurture and develop the whole student – not just educate the mind. We are preparing young people not just for college, but for life.

This spring we are planning to again participate in FABA – Fine Arts, Bible, & Academic State Competitions with other AACS member schools in the state. We have many talented students that will be performing in speech, spelling, art, science fair and other academics. We look forward to meeting other Christian schools and being inspired to participate in new areas next year.

God does make provision for every family desiring a Christian education. It does take faith and obedience to do His will.

Teaching Your Child the Joy of Reading

Reading increases one’s vocabulary, stimulates one’s thoughts, and broadens one’s horizons.

Do your children enjoy reading, or do they view it as a task about as enjoyable as a trip to the dentist? If your children do not enjoy reading, what can you as a parent do to change the attitude of your children towards reading?

John Milton, Christian author of the classic Paradise Lost, said, “Good books are the lifeblood of a nation.” What is true of a nation is first true of the families and individuals in that nation.

In spite of the fact that Americans have greater access to a larger supply of reading material than any other people in history, we are a nation of nonreaders. As a result, we are missing many benefits of reading. Reading provides one of the least expensive means of entertainment, but there is far more than that. Reading increases one’s vocabulary, stimulates one’s thoughts, and broadens one’s horizons.

We, as parents, can do much to teach our children the joy of reading. Perhaps the following suggestions will help you in this worthy task.

1. Provide your child with an abundance of good reading material in your home.

Attend used book sales and yard sales to look for good but inexpensive books. The internet is also a good source for new and used books. Subscribe to a variety of good magazines. As a family, make regular use of your local library. Your children will not read unless the material is available to them.

2. Encourage your children to read about a variety of subjects.

Especially encourage reading in areas of special interests. Help your children to understand that books can open up a host of interesting topics. If your son is interested in sports, encourage him to read about various sports, biographies of famous atheletes, and “how-to” books that will help him improve his own abilities. If your daughter enjoys short fiction, introduce her to some of the famous short story writers, especially the humorous ones who often are left out of the traditional literature textbooks.

3. Guide you children’s reading, providing direction and purpose.

Be aware of what your children are reading. Not all materials are suitable or worthwhile, so help your children select materials that are consistent with biblical principles.

4. Prioritize your family activities so that your children have time to read.

Reading takes time. It is so easy to let jobs, clubs, entertainment, even church activities crowd out family reading time. No matter how many good books you may make available to your children, unless you afford them time to read, they will not be able to take advantage of the books. Make reading a priority in your home, even if you have to curtail other activities.

5. Participate with your children in reading.

Do not simply tell them, “Here are the books, now read,” while you go off to watch television or wash the car. Set a positive example for them by reading yourself. Nonreaders beget nonreaders. Children need to discuss their reading interests.

6. Read aloud to your children as often as possible.

Research shows that reading to children when they are preschool age actually improves their reading and listening skills. Read to your children to improve their reading fluency, reading rate, and reading accuracy. Oral reading relates positively to reading comprehension for children of all ages. Even high school children enjoy hearing their parents read a good book.

Broadening Horizons

Most of us will never leave our own country. Some of us will never leave our own local region. But each of us can travel to the ends of the earth and beyond. We can inexpensively visit Shangri-La, explore the ocean floor with Cousteau, or leap onto the moon with Armstrong. With a little creative imagination and uninterrupted silence, we can all live exciting lives of adventure, humor, or travel-with a good book.

Offer your children this invitation inscribed in the children’s reading room of the Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

Library:

Books are keys to wisdom’s treasure;

Books are gates to lands of pleasure;

Books are paths that upward lead;

Books are Friends. Come, let us read.

Conclusion
If your children do not enjoy reading, do not merely shrug it off with, “Well, that’s just the way they are.” Rather, begin to apply the previous suggestions, and with a little time you may begin to notice that your children have an increased interest in reading. Perhaps they will never become avid “bookworms,” but they will certainly read more than they once were.

“The safety of our sons and daughters as they go out on the streets this very night is due to the influence of the preachers rather than to policeman and lawmakers. The safety of our nation, including all groups, depends on Christian education.” -Roger Ward Babson

From the Headmaster

We are coming to the end of the first quarter of our ninth year. There are so many things being accomplished by the wonderful and excellent volunteers, staff and faculty that God has given us. Some of these things include finishing the gym, girls volleyball, boys basketball, cheerleading and a return to FABA state competitions for grades 4-12. We are thankful for his favor and faithfulness to our kids.

We now look forward to doing our job: training young people. One of our most important emphases this year is Spiritual Life. God is training our students to be salt and light to the world (Matthew chapter 5). There is also special emphasis on your Chapel Club Worship Team. This contrasts us to other educational systems that focus only on the mind. Our school is a ministry and our focus is on training the character of Christ to every child.

We look forward to continued excellence in Richmond Academy’s ministry to its families.

Transforming Your Child’s Mind

The purpose of all education should be that of viewing God the way He views Himself in His word and in nature. Leading a child to the Lord is perhaps the greatest action parents can take for their children. Statistics show that as many as eighty-five percent of believers were saved before the age of fourteen. It is essential that children be challenged with their need to be saved at an early age. The aim of that challenge is for the child to submit himself/herself to the Lord and receive Jesus Christ in a born-again experience of salvation. Parents can point to that day as a great day in their lives. But leading children to the Lord is just the first of many important events in the lives of children. Receiving the Lord Jesus Christ results in a quickening of the spirit within us, a receiving of the Holy Spirit, and the impartation of a new nature (II Peter 1:4). Yet, the mind of the child is not directly impacted by that experience. It is the responsibility of the parents and Christian instructors to help children transform their minds in accordance with the instructions of Paul in Romans 12:2: ”Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.” This biblical challenge encourages every parent to ask the question, “How do I renew the mind of my child?” The answer may be the major challenge of parenthood. First of all, renewing the mind means the acquisition of new knowledge and understanding that will enable the child to view life from a Biblical perspective. It is knowledge that recognizes the place of God over the events of this world. It is knowledge that supports the development of a worldview that has God at the center of all things. There is no greater challenge for parents than to meet and fulfill this expectation. Secondly, it also means that the mind of the child should be shaped in particular ways. Again, the Bible speaks to several desires of God for our minds.

God desires for us to have a Submissive Mind. One needs only to read Paul’s descriptive words of Jesus in Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” to grasp the concept of a submissive mind. Versus that follow reveal that the major attribute of the mind of Christ was that of complete submission to His heavenly Father and a complete dedication to His Father’s will. That submission was so great that He surrendered His heavenly glory to come to earth to live the life of a servant and ultimately to die for the sins of the world. That is submission.

God desires for us to have a Sound Mind. Again, Paul teaches Timothy about this very desirable quality of the mind. In II Timothy 1:7 Paul says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” A sound mind is a mind that is secure. It also carries the idea of being self-controlled, of being disciplined, and of being settled upon the priorities of a life lived for God. This is a great challenge for parents because a sound mind is vital in the requirements of the transformed mind.

God desires for us to have a Searching Mind. Again, Paul speaks of the believers at Berea and lauds their searching minds. Acts 17:11 says, “…they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily…” A searching mind is a desirable quality for a child. Learning should be lifelong. A searching mind is critical to understanding Scriptures, but it is also critical to the acquisition of knowledge about mathematics, science, language, history, and other elements of the school curriculum. Parents do well for their children when they encourage them to be a searching learner within the parameters of the Bible, an avid reader, and one who desires knowledge.

Application: Parents bear the responsibility of rearing their children, children who ultimately belong to God. A major part of child rearing involves transforming the minds of children to view life from God’s perspective. God has revealed Himself in His Son, in His Word, and in nature. Both parents and children can know God personally and each can come to see the significance of God and his Word. The purpose of all education should be that of viewing God the way He views Himself in His Word and Nature. This demands a changed or transformed mind. The Scripture highlights the need for a mind shaped in the directions delcared in the Word of God – a submissive mind, a sound mind and a searching mind. Implementing this task ranks at the top of those responsibilities assigned to parents.
